Foxtail Necklaces
A foxtail necklace moves like rope. Pick one up and you'll see: dozens of small links folded over each other into a round cord with no front or back, so it catches light whichever way it turns and never lies wrong. People mistake it for something braided until they feel the weight.
Ours run from a 2mm line up to 8mm, which has real presence without being a chunky chain, all in 316L stainless steel, silver or 18k gold plated. Foxtail is dense for its width, so a 4mm wears heavier than a 4mm cable would. Lengths from 35cm to 90cm, more range than most stores give you, so measure where you'd like it to sit. It doesn't tangle with a second chain, which makes it the easiest of ours to layer. We do the same chain as a choker and a bracelet.
Which width should I get?
2mm and 3mm foxtail are fine and flexible; they layer, carry a light pendant, and move more than a cable of the same width. 5mm is the everyday foxtail worn on its own, with enough weight to sit still. 8mm is worn as the piece; the braid gives it more body than a flat 8mm chain, and it sits on the collarbone like a cord.
What length do I need?
Nine lengths, 35 to 90cm. The weave shows best on the collarbone, so 45cm for a foxtail worn alone. 50cm for one carrying a pendant. 55cm and 60cm for the 8mm on a broader frame. The optional 4 inch extender adds up to 10cm.
Silver or gold?
Gold. A plate on a braided chain catches light on every strand, so a gold foxtail looks like a plait of gold rather than a chain. Silver foxtail reads more like rope and more gothic. The steel under both is the same 316L, so pick by the rest of your jewellery.
Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?
No. The silver is solid 316L stainless steel and the gold is 18k plate over it. A braided chain has far more surface than a flat one and would show tarnish first if it could tarnish.
Can I wear it in the shower?
Yes. Salt lodges in the braid after a sea swim, so rinse it under the tap and dry it.
Will it kink?
No. A foxtail is woven rather than linked in a line, so it bends in every direction and does not fold on itself. If a flat chain you own keeps twisting under a collar, this is the link to change to.
What comes in the box?
A black velvet pouch. Where a gift box is offered, you'll see it as an option on the product page.
