Layered Necklaces

Layering works when the chains are fine enough to sit together and different enough to read as two. It fails when they tangle, which is mostly down to the chain and the lengths.

These are our fine plain chains, 4mm and under: cable, box, foxtail, Figaro and more, in 316L stainless steel, silver or 18k gold plated, cut and finished by us. Foxtail and box hold their shape and are the least likely to tangle; cable is the softest. If you want finer still, our dainty necklaces start at 2mm.

They're sold by length from 35cm to 90cm, which is what makes layering work. Keep them at least 5cm apart in length and pick two different chains, and they'll sit as a set rather than a knot.

How do I layer necklaces without them tangling?

Pick lengths at least 5cm apart, and pick two different chains, one with a bit of structure like box or foxtail. Put the heavier chain on the shortest length.

What length should I get?

Necklaces are sold by length from 35cm to 90cm. Measure a chain you already wear, end to end, or wrap a tape where you'd like it to sit. Where it sits depends where you'd like it to hang, so measure before you choose. The optional 4 inch extender gives you room either way.

Silver or gold?

Both are 316L stainless steel. The silver is steel all the way through, so there's nothing to wear off. The gold is an 18k plate over the same steel, the honest version of gold: it stays warm for years and wears first at the clasp, where it rubs most.

Is it waterproof?

Strictly, no jewellery is waterproof. Ours is water resistant: 316L stainless steel doesn't tarnish, so showers, swimming, the gym and sleeping in it are all fine. Rinse it after the sea or a pool and dry it.
