Cuban Link Chain Necklaces
A Cuban link necklace is the chain you buy when you want it to look like a chain. Flat, interlocking links that lie close to the skin and catch the light along their whole length. In this collection they run from 2mm, which is a fine line at the collarbone, up to 12mm, which is the one people mean when they say chunky.
Every one of ours is 316L stainless steel, silver or 18k gold plated, so it stays the colour you bought it whatever you do. Shower, gym, sleep, years. They're sold by length in centimetres, from 35cm to 90cm, which is a wider range than most: tight at the collarbone at one end, resting on the chest at the other. If you choose the extender option we fit it before it ships, so measure where you want it to sit and decide whether you'd like the extra room.
If you're unsure which width, 6mm is the most popular. Thin enough to wear with a pendant, thick enough to wear alone. If you already own one of our 6mm chains, the next one is either a 3mm to layer inside it or a 10mm to replace it on the nights it isn't enough. We've got the same chain as a choker and a bracelet, and the widths line up, so a set is a matter of picking the same number three times.
Which width should I get?
2mm and 3mm are fine Cuban chains that show the pattern up close and carry a pendant; they are the widths to layer. 4mm and 5mm are visible on their own and still go under a collar. 7mm is the width most people picture when they think of a Cuban chain: flat, obvious, comfortable all day. 10mm is heavy and is worn alone. 12mm is the heaviest Cuban we cut and is a piece you feel on the neck; buy it if you want it seen from across a room.
What length do I need?
Cuban necklaces come in 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 70, 80 and 90cm. 40cm is a choker fit. 45cm lands on the collarbone and is where most people start. 50cm drops a little lower. 55cm and 60cm sit on the chest and are the lengths for the 10mm and 12mm widths and for broader frames. 70cm and beyond hang low and are for layering under shorter chains. Add the optional 4 inch extender if you want to move a chain between two lengths.
Silver or gold?
Same steel, same links. Silver is the harder look and disappears against black. Gold is 18k plated over the steel and reads warmer and richer, and the flat Cuban link shows gold well because it catches light along the whole face of the chain. Match whatever you wear on your hands.
Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?
No. 316L stainless steel does not oxidise, so the silver chains stay bright without polishing, and there is no copper in it to leave a green line. The gold chains are plated over steel, not brass, so the plate is not pushed off from underneath.
Can I wear it in the shower?
Yes. Cuban chains in stainless steel are water resistant and stay on through showers, swimming and sleep. Rinse after salt water and dry.
Is it hypoallergenic?
For most wearers, yes. A wide flat link is more metal on more skin than any other chain, and that is when the grade matters; this is 316L.
Which fastening do they use?
A lobster clasp sized to the chain, with the optional extender hooked to it. The 10mm and 12mm chains get an oversized clasp on a thick jump ring so the fastening is as strong as the chain.
What comes in the box?
A black velvet pouch. Where a gift box is offered, you'll see it as an option on the product page.
