Which hoop size should I get?
The hoop diameter on each product page is the outside measurement. 12mm to 15mm hoops are huggies; they hug the lobe with almost no gap and are the size to sleep in. 20mm to 22mm hoops show a little air under the lobe and are the everyday size. 30mm hoops are a visible hoop and the size most charms hang best from. 40mm and 55mm hoops are large and are worn as the whole look. If you have a second or third piercing higher up the ear, buy 12mm or 15mm for those; larger hoops do not sit well above the lobe.
What does the wire thickness mean?
The thickness is the gauge of the hoop itself. 2mm and 2.5mm wire is fine and reads delicate. 3mm is the standard and is what most of ours are. 4mm and 5mm are chunky hoops with real weight and are the ones to buy if you want the hoop noticed without a charm on it. Thicker wire also needs a slightly stretched piercing to go through; if your holes are tight, stay at 3mm.
Hinged, huggie or stud?
Hinged hoops open on a hinge and click shut; they are the most secure and the easiest to put in one-handed. Huggies are small hinged hoops built to sit tight to the lobe. Studs sit flat with a butterfly back and are the choice for work, for sleeping and for the upper ear. Drops and dangles hang from a hinged hoop or a stud, so they follow the same rules; check the drop length on the product page, which runs from 30mm to 95mm.
Will they tarnish or turn my ears green?
No. The hoops, posts and charms are 316L stainless steel, so they do not oxidise and contain no copper. The gold pairs are 18k gold plated over that steel. The gothic stud earrings with a stone use 5A cubic zirconia, not a mined gem, set in the same steel.
Can I wear them in the shower?
Yes. Stainless steel earrings are water resistant, so they stay in through showers and swimming. Rinse and dry them if they get product in the hinge.
Are they hypoallergenic?
For most wearers, yes, and this is the range where it matters most. The post is the part of an earring that sits inside the skin, and these posts are 316L stainless steel. If your ears react to high street earrings, that is nearly always the nickel plating on the post, and there is none on these.
How should I care for them?
Wipe the hoop and post with a dry cloth when you take them out. A dab of surgical spirit on the post now and then keeps the piercing happy. Keep the hinge free of hairspray. Store pairs together in the pouch so the charms do not scratch each other.
What comes in the box?
A pair, in a black velvet pouch. Where a gift box is offered, you'll see it as an option on the product page.
