Which width should I get?
The chain chokers run 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm. Under 4mm is a fine line that layers and carries a small pendant. 4mm to 6mm is the everyday width; it shows on its own, still goes under a collar, and takes most of our pendants. 8mm and up is a chain worn for its own sake. The 10mm and 12mm Cuban links are flat and heavy and are best worn alone with nothing else at the neck. If you are between two, go thinner for layering and thicker for wearing alone.
What size do I need?
Measure your neck where the choker will sit. Small fits 11 to 15 inches (28 to 38cm), Medium 13 to 17 inches (33 to 43cm), Large 15 to 19 inches (38 to 48cm). Every choker includes a 4 inch extender chain, so each size covers a 4 inch range on its own. A 14 inch neck fits Small worn near its longest or Medium worn near its shortest. Pick Small for a tight fit, Medium for room.
Which chain link is right for me?
Cable is the plain round link and the best chain to hang a pendant from. Box is square and catches light on every face. Cuban is flat and interlocking, sits smooth against the neck and reads heavy at any width. Figaro alternates three short links with one long, which gives a plain chain a pattern. Belcher, also called Rolo, is round and open, so a charm clips straight onto it. Foxtail is woven and moves like rope. Paperclip is long flat links and lies flat under a shirt collar.
Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?
No. Sterling silver goes dark over time and plated brass leaves a green line; stainless steel does neither. It does not react with air, so there is nothing to go dark, and there is no copper in it, so there is nothing to leave a mark. That is why we can put a lifetime guarantee on every choker on this page.
Can I wear it in the shower?
Yes, for the plain chain and pendant chokers; they are water resistant and you can sleep, shower and swim in them. Two things on this page are the exception. The slip chains and the heart padlock chokers carry a chrome plated brass padlock and should be kept dry. The 24/7 locking day collars are the opposite case: their padlock is full stainless steel and is fine in water.
Is it hypoallergenic?
For most wearers, yes. If plated costume jewellery gives you a reaction, a steel choker is usually the fix, because the reaction is nearly always to nickel plating, and there is no plating here. The one caution is a diagnosed nickel allergy rather than a sensitivity: stainless steel does contain nickel locked into the alloy, so try it on your wrist for a day first.
Which fastening do they use?
A lobster clasp at the back, sized to the chain, with the 4 inch extender chain attached to it. The heavier chokers get a larger clasp so it is easy to work with one hand. The day collars and slip chains fasten differently and are described on their own pages.
What comes in the box?
A black velvet pouch. Day collars come gift boxed as standard. On everything else, where a gift box is offered, you'll see it as an option on the product page.
