Gold Initial Necklaces

A gold initial necklace in our blackletter alphabet, the letter cut big enough to read from across a room, on a fine chain in 18k gold plated 316L stainless steel. Pick the letter on the product and it shows you that one.

The alphabet is ours, drawn from three blackletter typefaces, and the full A to Z is here in gold. Gold plate over steel is what keeps the serifs sharp and the colour warm; a stamped alloy initial goes soft at the edges and brown at the back within months. The plate eventually wears where the chain rubs most, over years, and against black it looks warmer than silver ever will. Necklaces run from 35cm to 90cm, with the extender fitted if you choose it. If silver's the metal, the same letters are next door.

Which font should I choose?

Old English if they wear black; the blackletter serifs catch the gold plate and read as an ornament until you are close enough to see the letter. Bold if you are buying for someone whose taste you are less sure of, because a plain heavy letter reads as an initial from across a room and goes with anything. Both are 23mm high and 18mm wide, cast in the round, so the letter has depth rather than being stamped from sheet.

What length do I need?

Small is 41cm and puts the letter at the collarbone. Medium is 46cm, a little lower, and is the length to buy as a gift because it sits right on nearly everyone. Large is 51cm and drops onto the chest, which suits a broader build or a chain worn over a shirt. The optional 4 inch extender adds up to 10cm if you would rather not guess.

How is this different from a high street gold initial?

The metal under the plate. A gold plated brass letter corrodes from underneath and goes dull at the serifs and the bail within months. Ours is 18k gold over 316L stainless steel; the steel does not corrode, so the plate stays where it was put. It can be showered in. It does not leave a green mark, because there is no copper in it. And the casting keeps its edges, because steel is harder than brass.

Is it hypoallergenic?

For most wearers, yes. Cheap gold chains put a nickel layer between the brass and the gold, and the nickel is what reacts. There is no nickel plated layer here; the gold sits straight on 316L stainless steel.

How should I care for it?

Put perfume and hairspray on before the necklace, not after. Dry the letter after a shower so water does not pool in the serifs. That is all it needs; it never wants polishing.

What comes in the box?

A black velvet pouch. Where a gift box is offered, you'll see it as an option on the product page, and most gold initials go out in one.
