Cuban Link Chain Chokers

A Cuban choker is the one people mean when they say "a chain". Flat, interlocking links that lie close to the throat and catch the light along the whole length, close enough to the neck that it moves when you do.

Ours run from 2mm, which is a fine line at the base of the throat, up to 12mm, which is the one you build the outfit round. All of them are 316L stainless steel, silver or 18k gold plated, so they stay the colour you bought them. Shower, gym, sleep, years. Chokers are where cheap plating fails first, because the clasp sits right on the skin at the back of the neck, and that's exactly where steel earns its keep.

They come in Small, Medium and Large by neck measurement, with the 4 inch extender fitted to the chain rather than loose in the box, so the size you choose has room built in. Wrap a tape round your neck where you want it to sit and pick the size that covers you. If you're between sizes, go down: the extender adds room, but nothing takes it away. A 4mm or 6mm is the everyday one. If you already own one of those, our 10mm is the next one you'll want.

Which width should I get?

2mm and 3mm are fine Cuban chokers, a line of pattern at the throat that layers with a pendant necklace below it. 4mm and 5mm show on their own and still sit under a shirt collar. 7mm is the width most people mean by a Cuban choker: flat, visible, comfortable all day. 10mm and 12mm are the heavy ones, worn alone with nothing else at the neck, and the 12mm has real weight to it. If you are buying one, 5mm in silver is the safe middle.

What size do I need?

Three sizes with a 4 inch extender on each: Small for 11 to 15 inch necks (28 to 38cm), Medium 13 to 17 (33 to 43cm), Large 15 to 19 (38 to 48cm). A 14 inch neck is in Small at the long end and Medium at the short end; choose Small for a Cuban that sits tight at the throat and Medium for one that drops. The 10mm and 12mm links are thick as well as wide and take a little more room round the neck, so a measurement at the top of a range on those means the next size up.

Silver or gold?

The link and the sizes are identical; only the surface changes. Silver at the throat reads sharp and sits under any colour. Gold, an 18k plate over the same steel, reads warmer and is the one people wear tight against a black shirt; the 3mm gold Cuban choker is among the pieces we make most of. Go with whatever is already on your hands.

Will it tarnish or turn my neck green?

No. 316L stainless steel does not oxidise, so no polishing, and contains no copper, so no green line where the choker sits. The gold is plated over steel, not brass, so it holds its colour.

Can I wear it in the shower?

Yes. It can stay on through a shower, a swim and a night's sleep without coming off or losing its finish.

Is it hypoallergenic?

For most wearers, yes. A flat Cuban link lies against the skin along its whole length, so there is more contact than with a round chain; surgical grade steel is the only material we would put that much of against a neck.

How do I layer a Cuban choker?

A 3mm Cuban choker at the throat, a 4mm chain at 45cm below it, a pendant at 50cm. Keep one metal. Or wear a 10mm Cuban choker alone and put nothing under it; the width is the look.

What comes in the box?

A black velvet pouch. Where a gift box is offered, you'll see it as an option on the product page.
