Cross, crucifix or ankh?

A plain cross has no figure on it and reads as a symbol rather than a statement of faith; it is the one most people buy. A crucifix carries the figure. The ankh is Egyptian, a cross with a loop at the top meaning life, and suits anyone who wants the shape without the church. All three come as pendants. The ankh and plain cross come as hoop earrings too. The cross link chains are plain crosses joined end to end, and read as pattern more than symbol.

What size cross should I get?

The pendant crosses are 20mm high on the smaller pieces and 30mm by 20mm on the larger. A 20mm cross on a 3mm chain sits at the collarbone as a detail. A 30mm cross on a 4mm or 5mm chain is the traditional gothic cross and hangs on the chest. The cross link chains are 12mm and 18mm wide, measured across the crosses, and are worn for the chain itself rather than as a pendant.

What length do I need?

Cross necklaces are sold at 35 to 90cm in the standard steps. 50cm is the traditional cross length and puts it on the chest. 45cm sits it at the collarbone. 60cm and above hang it low, which suits a large cross over a shirt. Cross link chokers come in Small (11 to 15 inch necks), Medium (13 to 17) and Large (15 to 19) with a 4 inch extender. Cross charm bracelets are 16 to 22cm with an optional 4cm extender.

Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?

No. Cast steel crosses keep their edges and their colour; there is no plate on the silver to wear through and no copper to mark the skin. The gold crosses are 18k gold plated over the same steel.

Can I wear it in the shower?

Yes. Pendants, chains and earrings are all stainless steel and water resistant. The one cross piece that is not is the faux leather cross collar, which should stay dry.

Is it hypoallergenic?

For most wearers, yes. A cross pendant sits on the chest all day and a cross hoop sits in the ear, and 316L is the grade chosen for exactly those places.

Is a cross a good gift?
