What size choker do I need?
Measure round your neck where you want the choker to sit, usually just above the collarbone, and keep the tape snug but not tight. Small fits 11 to 15 inches (28 to 38cm), Medium 13 to 17 inches (33 to 43cm), Large 15 to 19 inches (38 to 48cm). The ranges overlap on purpose. If your measurement lands in two sizes, take the smaller one if you like a choker close to the throat and the larger one if you want it to sit lower.
Every stainless steel chain choker includes a 4 inch extender chain, so a Medium worn at its shortest sits at 13 inches and worn at its longest at 17. Velvet and faux leather bands come with the same 4 inch adjuster. Buckle collars are cut differently: Small to Medium fits 11.5 to 15 inch necks, Medium to Large 14 to 18.5 inches.
Which width should I get?
Chain chokers run from 2mm to 12mm. A 2mm or 3mm chain is a thin line at the throat that layers under anything and carries a small pendant. 4mm to 6mm is the width most people wear daily; it shows on its own and still sits under a shirt collar. From 8mm up the chain becomes the whole outfit. Our 10mm and 12mm Cuban and chainmail chokers are heavy, flat and meant to be worn alone.
Velvet bands come in 10mm, 16mm and 22mm. Faux leather bands are 8mm. Buckle collars are wider again and are measured by the ring they carry, from 40mm to 60mm.
Chain choker, pendant choker or collar?
Buy a plain chain choker before anything else. It sits under every neckline, will take a pendant later, and stacks above a longer necklace. A pendant choker fixes a symbol at the front and does not need anything else near it. A collar, whether a faux leather buckle collar or a stainless steel day collar, is worn to be read. If you are buying for someone else and do not know which they want, the plain chain in their metal is the safe choice.
Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?
No. The chain chokers are 316L stainless steel, the grade used for surgical tools and watch cases. It does not oxidise, so it does not go dark the way sterling silver does, and it does not leach copper, which is what turns skin green. The gold chokers are 18k gold plated over that same steel, so the base metal is not brass. The clasps and extenders on the velvet and faux leather chokers are stainless too. We cover the stainless steel chokers with a lifetime guarantee.
Can I wear it in the shower?
Stainless steel chokers, yes. They are water resistant and can be worn in the shower, in the sea and to bed. Velvet and faux leather chokers should stay dry; the band marks and the velvet loses its pile. Slip chains and heart padlock chokers have a chrome plated brass padlock at the front, and brass and water do not mix.
Is it hypoallergenic?
The steel chokers, for most wearers, yes. Most reactions to cheap chokers are to the nickel plating on the clasp, and there is no plating on ours. The velvet and faux leather bands are fine against skin; their clasps are stainless too. The buckle collars have chrome plated hardware, so if you react to costume jewellery, wear those over a shirt collar.
What comes in the box?
Stainless steel chokers arrive in a black velvet pouch. Velvet and faux leather chokers ship in an organza bag. Where a gift box is offered, you'll see it as an option on the product page. Day collars all come gift boxed as standard, and the 24/7 locking ones include the hex key for the padlock.
