Gifting jewellery is easier than it looks, as long as you know one thing about the person. The month they were born. The letter their name starts with. Whether they wear silver or gold. Whether they'd rather have a padlock than a rose.

If you know the month, a birthstone. If you know the letter, an initial. If you know the words, something engraved, which takes two to three working days, so leave time. If you know they've been burned by cheap chains, a plain one in 316L stainless steel, which won't turn their neck green and will still look right next year. If you don't know any of it, a gift card lets them pick, and it doesn't expire. What should I buy them?

Start from the occasion. For a birthday, their birthstone or their initial. For an anniversary, something engraved with the date, or a heart. For Christmas, a chain in the metal they already wear. What if I've got a budget?

Our Secret Santa picks are all under £10, the stocking fillers under £15, and the gifts under £20 speak for themselves. Most of them are steel, which is what makes a cheap gift one that lasts.

What if I don't know their size?

Find a necklace they already wear and measure it end to end, clasp included. That's the length to buy. Our necklaces are sold in centimetres from 35cm to 90cm, and you can add the optional 4 inch extender on the product if you'd like some room either way. We can't tell you what size someone is, but the chain on their neck can.

How do I size a choker I'm buying for someone else?

Measure a choker or short chain they already wear, end to end, and compare it with the lengths on the product. Our chokers come in Small, Medium and Large, and every one has the 4 inch extender fitted to the chain. If their chain falls between two of our sizes, take the smaller one: the extender adds room, but nothing takes it away.

How do I get a bracelet size without asking?

Borrow a bracelet they wear and measure it end to end. Ours are sold in 2cm steps, and if you'd like the 4cm extender, choose it on the product and we fit it before it ships, which gives you some room if you're working from a guess.

Silver or gold?

Look at what they already wear, on their hands and in their ears, and match it. Both are 316L stainless steel underneath. The gold is an 18k plate over that steel, which stays warm for years but eventually wears where it rubs hardest. The silver is steel all the way through, so there's nothing to wear off.

Will it tarnish or turn their skin green?

Not the steel. 316L stainless steel doesn't tarnish and has no copper in it to leave a green line, so it looks the same next year as it does out of the box. It doesn't react with skin for most wearers.

How long does engraving take?

Engraved pieces are made to order here in the UK and take two to three working days before they ship, so give yourself a week before the date. Because they carry your words they can't be returned, so read it back twice and check the spelling of the name.

What if I really don't know what they'd like?

A gift card lets them choose for themselves. It's on this collection, first in the list.

Does it come gift boxed?

Day collars come gift boxed as standard. On other pieces, where a gift box is offered you'll see it as an option on the product; add it there before it goes in your basket. Steel pieces without a box come in a black velvet pouch.
