Box Chain Necklaces
Box chain necklaces are the ones that hold a pendant still. If you've ever had a pendant spin round to the wrong side by lunchtime, the chain was the problem, and the fix is a box. Square in section, each link a little cube, so it hangs straight and stays put. It's the one we'd put a pendant on every time.
Ours go from a 2mm that vanishes under whatever's hanging from it up to a 6mm that's a piece in its own right, in 316L stainless steel, silver or 18k gold plated, so the edges of those little squares stay crisp instead of wearing dull. Lengths from 35cm to 90cm, which is more room than most stores give you: choker length if you want it tight, down on the chest if you don't. We do the same chain as a choker and a bracelet if you want to match.
Which width should I get?
2mm is a fine box chain for a pendant up to about 20mm, or for layering; it shows as a thread of light. 4mm is the everyday box chain, visible on its own and still takes a pendant. 6mm is a chain worn for itself, and the square-edged 6mm is the sharpest-looking plain chain we cut.
Round or square box?
Round box has softened edges on each link and reads smooth. Square box keeps the corners and reads harder and more geometric. At 2mm and 4mm the difference is small; at 6mm the square version is noticeably sharper.
What length do I need?
Box necklaces come in 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 70, 80 and 90cm. 45cm at the collarbone for a chain worn alone. 50cm for a pendant. 40cm at the throat. 60cm and up for layering or a large pendant over a shirt. The optional 4 inch extender adds up to 10cm.
Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?
No. The silver box chain is solid 316L stainless steel; the gold 6mm is 18k gold plated over the same steel. Square links have edges where plate would wear first, and there is no plate on the silver to wear.
Can I wear it in the shower?
Yes. Water resistant. Dry it and the faces of the links come back bright.
Is it hypoallergenic?
For most wearers, yes. It's 316L stainless steel.
