A gold choker sits right where people look, so the colour matters more than it does anywhere else. Every one of these is 316L stainless steel under an 18k gold plate. Which width should I get?
Gold chokers run 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm and 15mm. 2mm and 3mm are fine chains that show as a line of gold; they are the most bought widths on this page and layer with a longer necklace. 4mm to 6mm is a chain you notice on its own. 8mm and up is worn for itself; the 10mm gold Cuban and Byzantine are heavy and flat and are worn alone. The 15mm paperclip is wide rather than heavy, with long open links.
What size do I need?
Measure your neck where the choker will sit. Small fits 11 to 15 inches (28 to 38cm), Medium 13 to 17 inches (33 to 43cm), Large 15 to 19 inches (38 to 48cm). The plain chain chokers include a 4 inch extender, so each size covers its full range. The gold day collars are sold in exact inch sizes from 11 to 19 with the extender as an option.
Will the gold wear off?
Not in normal wear. The plate is 18k gold over 316L stainless steel. On gold plated brass, the brass tarnishes under the plate and pushes through at the edges, which is the brassy look you get after a month. Steel does not tarnish, so the plate has nothing working against it from underneath. Perfume, hairspray and chlorine are the things that dull any plate over years; keep them off it. Will it turn my skin green?
No. A green ring under a gold choker means a brass base; ours is steel, and there is no copper in it to react.
Can I wear it in the shower?
Yes. Water does not get under a plate bonded to steel, so showers and sea swims are fine. Rinse it after salt water and dry it. A long soak in a chlorinated pool is the one thing that dulls any gold plate, so take it off for that.
Is it hypoallergenic?
For most wearers, yes. The steel under the plate is surgical grade, and the plate is gold, so there is no nickel layer between them to react with skin the way a cheap gold chain does.
How do I layer a gold choker?
A 2mm or 3mm gold choker at the throat, then a 4mm gold chain at 45cm, then a pendant at 50cm. Keep it all gold; mixed metals at the neck only work when one tone clearly leads. Different link types in the same colour read as intentional.
