What size pendant should I get?

Ours come in three bands. Small pendants, 10mm to 18mm, sit at the collarbone and read as a detail rather than a piece; they suit layering and daily wear under a collar. Standard pendants, 20mm to 23mm, are the most common size and are visible without being large. Large pendants, 30mm and up, are worn to be seen and want a wider chain under them. Each product page lists the pendant size in millimetres, height by width, so you can hold a ruler to your chest before you buy.

What length do I need?

Pendant necklaces are sold at 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 70, 80 and 90cm. For a pendant, 45cm sits it just below the collarbone and 50cm on the upper chest; those two lengths cover most people. 55cm and 60cm suit a broad chest or a large pendant. 35cm and 40cm put the pendant at the throat like a choker. The optional 4 inch extender adds up to 10cm to any length, which is worth having if you want the pendant to sit at two heights.

Which chain should the pendant hang on?

The chain is chosen for you, matched to the pendant, and it is usually cable, box or Belcher because round or square links let the pendant hang straight. A 10mm to 20mm pendant hangs on 2mm chain, a 20mm to 30mm pendant on 3mm or 4mm, and the chunky pendants on 10mm Cuban. If you already own a chain and want a pendant to add to it, look for the same width and the pendant will sit right.

Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?

No. A cast steel pendant has no plating on the silver versions, so there is nothing to wear through, and 316L does not oxidise. The gold pendants are plated over steel rather than brass, so the plate stays put. The green mark from a cheap pendant is copper; there is none here.

Can I wear it in the shower?

Yes. Pendants and chains are water resistant. Anything with deep casting, a skull, a coiled snake, collects hair product in the recesses, and a rinse under the tap every week or so keeps the detail crisp.

Is it hypoallergenic?

For most wearers, yes. The pendant sits on the skin at the chest all day, which is the reason it is stainless steel rather than zinc alloy or pewter. If a pendant from elsewhere left a mark, this steel is the difference.

Which pendant for a gift?

A cross or a skull is the safe gothic gift; they suit anyone who wears black. A padlock or a heart says something more specific. A crescent moon or a snake reads witchy. If you know their tone, buy it; if you do not, buy silver. Pendant necklaces arrive in a black velvet pouch, and where a gift box is offered, you can add it on the product page.
