Gothic Snake Jewellery

Snake jewellery carries the oldest symbol in the book, and the one that means the most different things: rebirth, poison, protection, temptation, depending on who's wearing it and why. Ours don't tell you which. These snake necklaces are pendants on a chain, cast in 316L stainless steel, finished in silver, and made to be worn daily rather than kept for occasions.

The snake pendants sit on our box and foxtail chains, from a fine 2mm up to a 5mm that gives the pendant something to hang from. Steel is the reason the scales stay sharp. Plated alloy loses the fine detail first and goes dark in the grooves within a year; 316L doesn't tarnish, doesn't react with skin for most wearers, and can be worn in the shower and to bed without a second thought.

Necklaces are sold by length in centimetres, from 35cm to 90cm. Measure where you'd like the pendant to hang, and if you'd like the option of wearing it longer, choose the extender and we fit it before it ships. 45cm is a popular length for a pendant like this, but where it hangs is down to you: at the collarbone, or lower on the chest. Measure where you'd like it to sit rather than guess. It's a small collection; if the snake isn't the motif, the rest of our pendants are next door.

Coiled or plain?

The coiled snake pendant has the most detail and the most weight; it is cast in the round and hangs on a 4mm or 5mm chain at 50cm or longer so it sits on the chest. The serpent and key pendant is the storytelling one. The plainer snake pendants are a single curved line of scales on a 2mm or 3mm chain and read as a shape rather than a creature, which suits daily wear at the collarbone.

What length do I need?

Snake necklaces are sold at 35 to 90cm. 50cm puts a detailed pendant on the upper chest, which is where it reads best. 45cm sits it at the collarbone for the simpler pendants. 55cm and 60cm hang the coiled snake lower over a shirt. The optional 4 inch extender adds up to 10cm.

Which chain does it hang on?

The chain comes with the pendant, matched to its weight. The coiled and cast pendants sit on 4mm and 5mm; the fine snake lines sit on 2mm and 3mm. If you move a snake pendant to your own chain, match those widths so it hangs straight.

Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?

No. A cast steel snake has no plate to wear through, so the scales stay as cast, and 316L does not oxidise. No copper, so no green mark on the chest.

Can I wear it in the shower?

Yes. A steel snake can live in the shower. Once in a while run it under the tap and rub the scales with a thumb so product does not build up between them.

Is it hypoallergenic?

For most wearers, yes. It's 316L stainless steel.

How do I wear a snake pendant?

On its own at 50cm over a plain black top, or as the lowest of three chains with a 2mm cable and a 3mm Figaro above it. A coiled snake pendant and a plain chain choker at the throat is the classic pairing; the choker sits clear of the pendant and nothing competes. Snake earrings are not something we make, so keep the ears plain hoops.

Is a snake a good gift?

For a fresh start, yes; the shedding-skin meaning makes it the pendant people give for a new job, a move, or the first birthday after a hard year. Silver only, so no metal to guess. Black velvet pouch. Where a gift box is offered, you'll see it as an option on the product page.
