How does a slip chain work?
The chain runs through a solid O ring at the front and back on itself, so pulling the free end tightens it and the ring holds it there. There is no clasp. Put it over your head, pull it to the fit you want, and the heart padlock locks the chain to the ring so it stays. Loosen it the same way. One piece works as a loose necklace or a snug choker depending on how far you pull it.
What size do I need?
Slip chains are sold by chain length from Small to XXL. The fit itself adjusts through the ring, so the size sets how much chain hangs below the ring once it is snug rather than how tight it can go. Small leaves a short tail; XXL leaves a long one that hangs down the chest. If you want a choker with little hanging, buy Small or Medium. If you want the tail as part of the look, go larger.
Which chain width should I get?
The baby slip chains are 5mm to 7mm on a 25mm ring with a 25mm by 32mm heart padlock. The full-size slip chains are 9mm to 12mm on a 34mm ring with a 32mm by 40mm padlock. The baby versions are the everyday ones and sit closer to a normal choker. The 12mm Cuban and chainmail versions are heavy and are worn as the whole outfit. Is the padlock functional?
Yes. It is a working heart-shaped padlock in chrome plated brass, and the key comes on a clip so it can be worn on a second chain or kept by someone else. The Choker plus Key Holder Chain option adds that second chain.
Can I wear it in the shower?
No. The chain and ring are 316L stainless steel and would be fine, but the padlock and key are chrome plated brass, which dulls and can spot if it gets wet often. Take the slip chain off for showers and swimming and keep the lock dry.
Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?
The chain and O ring will not; they are stainless steel, non tarnish and copper free. The padlock is plated brass and can dull over time if it is not kept dry. It hangs at the front of the chain and does not sit against the neck.
Is it hypoallergenic?
The stainless steel chain and ring are hypoallergenic for most wearers. The plated brass padlock is not, so we do not describe the slip chains as hypoallergenic. If you react to plated metal, keep the lock over clothing rather than on skin.
What comes in the box?
A velvet pouch, with the padlock locked to the ring and the key on its clip. Slip chains are made in our UK studio and ship from stock. Day collars come gift boxed as standard. On everything else, where a gift box is offered, you'll see it as an option on the product page.
