Initial Necklaces

An initial necklace only works if the letter is worth looking at, so ours are cut in Old English blackletter, big enough to read from across a room, and finished in 316L stainless steel rather than plated alloy. That means the serifs stay sharp and the letter stays silver or gold, which is not what happens to a stamped alloy initial after a few months on a neck.

The alphabet is ours. We took inspiration from three blackletter typefaces, close enough in style to sit together, and cut every letter in both the oversized and the regular size, so whichever initial you're after, it exists, and it matches the rest of the set. You won't find this alphabet on another site, and the full A to Z is available in both silver and gold.

Pick a letter on the product and it shows you that one, as a longer necklace on a fine chain or as a choker on a 4mm cable that sits at the throat. The oversized letters are the ones people buy for themselves. The smaller pendants are the ones that get bought as gifts, usually as someone else's initial rather than the wearer's. Necklaces are sold by length in centimetres, from 35cm to 90cm, which is more range than most stores give you, with the extender fitted if you choose it. Chokers are sized Small, Medium and Large by neck measurement with the 4 inch extender built in. If you want two letters, wear them on two chains at different lengths so each one reads on its own. We've also got initial chokers and a bracelet in the same lettering, and the whole set lives in our initial jewellery collection.

Old English or bold?

Old English is blackletter, the gothic tattoo script, and reads as an ornament from a distance and as the letter up close. Bold is a plain heavy letter that reads as the initial from anywhere. For someone who wears black, Old English. For a gift where you are not sure, bold. Both are 23mm high and 18mm wide, and both come in silver and gold.

What length do I need?

Small is 41cm and sits at the collarbone. Medium is 46cm and sits just below it; this is the standard length and the one to buy for a gift. Large is 51cm and sits on the chest, which suits a broader frame. Add the optional 4 inch extender if you want two lengths from one chain, or if you are guessing.

Can I wear two initials?

Yes. Two letters at 41cm and 46cm sit one above the other without tangling. Or two letters on one chain, which some people do for a couple or a child.

Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?

No. The letter is cast 316L stainless steel, with no plate on the silver and an 18k gold plate over steel on the gold. It does not oxidise and contains no copper, so the pendant stays bright where a plated initial goes dull.

Can I wear it in the shower?

Yes. Water resistant. Dry the letter after so water does not sit in the serifs of the Old English.

Is it hypoallergenic?

For most wearers, yes. Surgical grade steel, which is why it can be worn every day.

What comes in the box?

A black velvet pouch. Where a gift box is offered, you'll see it as an option on the product page.
