Initial Chokers
An initial choker puts the letter where people read it, at the base of the throat, rather than down on the chest where a necklace hangs. Ours come two ways: our blackletter alphabet on a 4mm cable chain, or a letter charm on a velvet band, which is the softer version for people who want the initial without the chain.
The lettering is the same alphabet we use across everything with a letter on it, drawn from three blackletter typefaces, and it's ours. On the chain chokers it's cut in 316L stainless steel, silver or 18k gold plated, so the serifs stay sharp; on the velvet chokers it hangs as a charm from the band. Both are sized to the neck: chain chokers in Small, Medium and Large by neck measurement with the 4 inch extender fitted, velvet in the same sizes with an adjuster. Pick your letter on the product, or theirs. If you'd rather it were longer, the initial necklaces have the full A to Z on a fine chain.
Old English or bold?
Old English is blackletter, the gothic script, and reads as an ornament as much as a letter; up close it is clearly the initial, from across a room it is a gothic shape. Bold is a plain heavy sans letter that reads as the initial from anywhere. For yourself, whichever you would tattoo. For a gift, Old English if they wear black and bold if you are not sure.
What size do I need?
Measure your neck where the choker will sit. Small fits 11 to 15 inches (28 to 38cm), Medium 13 to 17 inches (33 to 43cm), Large 15 to 19 inches (38 to 48cm). The 4 inch extender is included, so each size covers its whole range. For a gift, Medium fits most adults.
Will it tarnish or turn my neck green?
No. A cast steel letter has no plate, so its edges stay sharp and its colour stays put, and the chain is the same steel. There is no copper in any of it to mark the neck.
Can I wear two initials together?
Yes. Two initial chokers in different sizes, or one worn on its shortest setting and one on its longest, sit one above the other without tangling. A letter choker above a plain 2mm chain necklace is the other way to do it.
Can I wear it in the shower?
Yes, showers and swimming included. Give the letter a wipe afterwards; the Old English serifs hold a drop of water.
Is it hypoallergenic?
For most wearers, yes. The letter and the chain are the same surgical grade steel, with nothing plated and nothing to react.
Which chain width?
The chain is matched to the letter. The plain initial chokers hang the letter on 2mm to 4mm cable or satellite chain so the letter is the focus. The spiked paperclip versions are wider, with the letter set between spiked links, and are worn as the whole piece.
Silver only?
Yes, on this page. The initial chokers are cast and cut in silver 316L stainless steel. If you want a gold letter, the initial necklaces come in both metals at 41cm, 46cm and 51cm.
Is an initial choker a good gift?
It is the easiest personalised gift to get right: one letter, one metal, done. Birthdays and Valentine's especially. Comes in a black velvet pouch; where a gift box is offered, add it on the product page.
