Which padlock is right for me?
Pendant padlocks are decorative. They do not open and sit on a 2mm to 4mm chain as a small lock at the collarbone, from about 20mm high. The 24/7 locking day collars use a full stainless steel padlock, 28mm by 15mm, that opens with a hex key and is the fastening for the whole collar; there is no clasp. The heart padlock chokers and slip chains use a chrome plated brass working padlock, 25mm by 32mm or 32mm by 40mm, with a key on a clip. If the lock is meant to stay on, buy the stainless day collar. If the lock is meant to be seen and handled, buy the heart padlock.
What size do I need?
Padlock necklaces are sold by length in centimetres, 35 to 90cm, with an optional 4 inch extender. Padlock chokers come in Small (11 to 15 inch necks), Medium (13 to 17) and Large (15 to 19) with a 4 inch extender included. The day collars are sold in exact inch sizes from 11 to 19 inches; measure your neck where the collar will sit and choose that number, or one up if you want it loose.
Which chain width should I get?
A pendant padlock sits best on 2mm to 4mm chain. The locking day collars come on 3mm, 4mm, 8mm and 10mm chain, from a fine cable to a spiked link. The heart padlock chokers are on 10mm Cuban, because the lock is heavy and the chain needs to carry it. As a rule, the bigger the lock, the wider the chain under it.
Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?
The chain, no. It is 316L stainless steel on every piece here, silver or 18k gold plated, and it does not oxidise or leach copper. The stainless padlocks on the 24/7 day collars are the same. The chrome plated brass padlocks on the heart padlock pieces are plated, so they can dull if they get wet often. We cover the stainless steel with a lifetime guarantee.
Can I wear it in the shower?
The stainless steel chains and pendants, yes. The 24/7 locking day collars, yes, lock included. The heart padlock chokers and slip chains, no; keep the brass padlock dry and take the piece off for showers and swimming.
Is it hypoallergenic?
The chain and pendants, for most wearers, yes. The chrome plated brass padlocks are not, which is one reason they hang from the front of the chain instead of resting on the skin.
Is the padlock functional?
On the 24/7 locking day collars and the heart padlock pieces, yes. The stainless collar padlock locks with a hex (Allen) key, supplied. The brass heart padlocks lock with a small key, also supplied, and some pieces ship with a second chain to hang the key from. Pendant padlocks are solid and do not open.
What comes in the box?
A black velvet pouch for the pendants and chokers. Day collars all come gift boxed as standard; the 24/7 locking ones have the hex key inside. On anything else, where a gift box is offered, you'll see it as an option on the product page.
