Paperclip Necklaces
Paperclip necklaces are the chain with the long, flat, open links, and ours are the big ones. Where most paperclip chains are fine and decorative, these start at 8mm and go up to 18mm, where each link is the length of your thumbnail and the necklace is the whole outfit. It's a small collection because chain this size is slow to come by, and we'd rather do a few properly.
They're 316L stainless steel, silver or 18k gold plated, which matters on an open link like this: a plated alloy paperclip goes dull inside the loops where you can't polish, and ours doesn't. You can wear it every day, in the shower and to bed, and it'll look the same in five years.
Necklaces are sold by length in centimetres, from 35cm to 90cm, and if you choose the extender option we fit it before it ships. A wide paperclip sits best short, around the collarbone, where the links lie flat and don't twist, so measure where you want it to sit rather than picking the length you'd choose for a finer chain. Which link size should I get?
The measurement on the product page is the length of each link. 8mm links are small and the chain reads as a fine chain with texture; it layers and takes a small pendant. 15mm links are the paperclip most people picture, obvious without being heavy, worn alone at 45cm or as the middle of a stack. 18mm links are long and open and are worn alone; nothing else at the neck.
What length do I need?
Paperclip necklaces come in 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 70, 80 and 90cm. 45cm puts the links on the collarbone, where they show best. 50cm sits just below. 40cm sits at the throat and reads as a choker. 60cm and above hang low and are for layering under a shorter chain. The optional 4 inch extender adds up to 10cm.
Can I hang a pendant on it?
Thread a small pendant through one of the links rather than hanging it from a bail, and it sits centred and flat. That works on the 8mm and 15mm. The 18mm is better left plain.
Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?
No. A flat link shows wear on its face first if it is plated; the silver paperclip has no plate, and the gold 15mm is 18k plated over steel rather than brass. No oxidising, no copper.
Can I wear it in the shower?
Yes. Water resistant, and there is nothing in a flat open link for water to sit in. Dry it after and it looks the same.
Is it hypoallergenic?
For most wearers, yes. 316L is the surgical grade, and the wide flat link puts more of it against the neck than a round chain, which is when the grade matters.
