Everything here is 316L stainless steel, silver or 18k gold plated, and every chain is cut and finished by us. The steel matters more on a pendant than on a chain. A cast pendant in plated alloy loses its detail first, in the recesses where you can't polish, and goes dark within a year. Ours keep their edges. You can wear them every day, in the shower and to bed. The one exception is the heart padlocks on the slip chains, which are plated brass and should come off for the shower.
Chokers and pendant chokers are sized Small, Medium and Large by neck measurement with the 4 inch extender fitted. Day collars are made to the inch, from 11 to 19, because a fit that's exact is part of what they mean. Pendant necklaces run from 35cm to 90cm, with the extender fitted if you choose it. If you know the motif you're after, the collections by style will get you there faster. If you don't, start with the pendants and let the chain follow. Which gothic necklace should I start with?
A plain 4mm chain in your metal at 45cm, then one pendant with a symbol you actually mean. A cross or a skull is the safe first pendant. A padlock or an O ring says something more specific. A snake or a crescent moon reads witchy. After that, a fine 2mm chain to layer above it and a chunky chain to wear alone on other days.
What length do I need?
35 and 40cm sit at the throat and are choker lengths. 45cm sits at the collarbone and is the standard first length. 50cm drops just below it and is the length most pendants are worn at. 55 and 60cm reach the chest, suit a large pendant or a broad frame, and are what most men choose. 70cm and above hang low for layering. The optional 4 inch extender adds up to 10cm.
What size pendant should I get?
Small pendants, 10mm to 18mm, are a detail at the collarbone. Standard pendants, 20mm to 23mm, are the most common size. Large pendants, 30mm and up, are worn to be seen and hang on a wider chain. The product page lists height by width in millimetres.
How do I layer gothic necklaces?
Three chains, 5cm apart, one metal. A 2mm cable at 40cm, a 4mm chain at 45cm, a pendant at 50cm. Vary the link type so each catches light differently. One pendant only; two pendants at different heights fight each other. A choker above the stack is fine because it sits at the throat, clear of the rest.
Will it tarnish or turn my skin green?
No. The silver pieces are solid 316L stainless steel with no plate, so nothing wears through and nothing oxidises. The gold is 18k gold plated over that steel. There is no copper in any of it, so no green line. Every necklace we make is covered by our lifetime guarantee.
Can I wear it in the shower?
Yes. Chains and pendants are water resistant. The only necklaces on the site to keep dry are the heart padlock pieces, whose padlock is chrome plated brass; those are marked on their own pages.
Is it hypoallergenic?
For most wearers, yes. It's 316L stainless steel. If a necklace has ever given you a rash at the back of the neck, nickel plating is the usual cause, and there is none on these.
